A user centered design blog by Andrew Fox

Bio

Background

Andrew FoxHello, I’m Andy – a designer based in Brighton, currently working for dotDigitalGroup in London.

I’ve been designing websites and apps of varying size for almost a decade and have worked with companies such as Kellogg’s, eBay, and Bombardier Transportation.

I’m an interface designer and an advocate of user centred design, an approach that I have been able to embrace within the digital world due to my background in product design. I love code and work in HTML and CSS as well as pen & paper and Adobe Fireworks (or Photoshop if I have to).

For me, digital design is all about people. I’m fascinated with interaction design and strive to create engaging, usable and delightful digital experiences using the latest technologies.

Professionally

I started designing around 1984, mainly with Lego bricks and progressed through my school years with a keen interest in design technology. I later graduated with a 1st class BSc in Product Design from the University of Brighton and found my way onto the internet from there.

In 2002 I started working for Jellifish, a web agency in The Potteries where I designed brochure and ecommerce sites. Moving back to Brighton in 2003, I started freelancing and contracting, working on visual presentation design for Bombardier Transportation, online campaigns for Halifax and a number of corporate, recruitment and ecommerce sites for agencies such as DLKW, Strategies, ThemLondon and Bluegrass Group.

From 2005 I spent four years leading design at a small agency in London mainly working on interface design on campaign websites and social apps for Kellogg’s in various markets worldwide. This involved project scoping, strategy, user analysis, information architecture and visual design whilst client handling and managing developers internally. I also dabbled in print design, packaging and POS for Gourmet Garden and Pizza Express.

In 2009 I joined dotDigitalGroup where I work as user experience designer for our leading email marketing product dotMailer, and agency designer for dotAgency where I work with companies such as Wateraid, ebay and Curzon Cinemas. Projects commonly involve user analysis, card sorting, information architecture, low fidelity prototyping and user testing as well as interface design and front end development.

Personally

I live in a little flat overlooking the sea and love nothing more than to spend time with my partner Rosalie, an illustrator and graphic designer. Food is a big part of our lives and we spend a large proportion of most weekends cooking and enjoying new recipes.

We love to visit new places and try to travel as much as we can, most recently Australia and Morocco. I’ve always been inspired by Italian style; my design hero is Giorgetto Giugiaro and have owned two Alfa Romeos almost as a celebration.

Life wouldn’t be life without friends and I spend a lot of my spare time with them eating, drinking, day tripping and partaking in various other activities, the annual ski trip being something I always look forward to.

Music is a massive part of my life and I played guitar in a band for a few years when I was younger. I love all kinds of music but still have my favorite bands. I also help run a little side project just for fun.
