Design & project management

KID has been used by Kellogg’s since 2003 and I was recently privileged to lead the design on its redevelopment. Whilst KID had previously been used as a static information based tool, it was decided that it needed to be more targeted and stripped down so that its core features were emphasised.

During the design stages, I was faced with the problem of usage. Although use of the tool is compulsory, how do you get people to use it more and turn it from something that is just used, to something that is an essentially valuable part of how they work? Another issue that faced them was internal communication and whilst they had previously had a forum, it was disjointed from the main tool.

It was clear to me that social networking needed to play a big part in this and so I drew up a list of features which would all link into each other to bring maximum value.

I ended up with a design for a membership system with a network of contacts. Each KID member has their own personal public dashboard with tools that are central to their work as well as a personal message board where they can receive messages from team leaders and other members. They also receive notifications via a widget on their dashboard and also also via SMS. Members can also access each others public dashboards to gain information and leave messages.

There is an incentive to use the system as everything is transparent and open for everyone to see. A prize based incentive scheme widget also not only motivates members to be the best but the public communication of winners also creates a competitive element.
